How Much Does EV Charger Installation Cost in 2026?
One of the most common questions we receive at Pennington Electrical Ltd is: how much does it cost to install an EV charger at home? The honest answer is that it depends on several factors, but for most standard installations in Leeds and West Yorkshire, you should budget between £800 and £1,200 for a complete, professionally installed 7kW smart charger.
The charger unit itself typically costs £300-£600 depending on the brand and features. Ohme, Hypervolt, and Pod Point sit at the lower end of this range, while Andersen and some premium smart chargers are at the higher end. The installation labour, dedicated circuit, and certification typically add £400-£600 on top of the hardware cost.
The biggest variable in installation cost is the cable run from your consumer unit to the charger position. A short run of 5-10 metres through a garage or along an external wall is straightforward and inexpensive. A longer run of 20-30 metres, or one that requires running cable through walls, under floors, or across a garden, adds significant time and materials cost. We always assess the cable route during our free survey and include it in your fixed-price quote.
Consumer unit upgrades are the other major cost variable. Many older homes in Leeds, particularly Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Beeston, Armley, and Bramley, have fuse boxes that lack the capacity or RCD protection needed for EV charging. A consumer unit upgrade typically costs £400-£700 and is often necessary before a charger can be safely installed. We include this in your quote if required.
Earthing upgrades are occasionally needed, particularly for properties with TT earthing systems or older earth electrodes. These are less common but can add £200-£400 to the installation cost. We check your earthing during the free survey and advise if any upgrades are needed.
The total cost for a standard installation in a modern Leeds home with a short cable run and adequate consumer unit is typically £800-£1,000. For an older property needing a consumer unit upgrade and a longer cable run, expect £1,200-£1,800. Commercial multi-point installations are priced individually based on the number of chargers, supply capacity, and any civil works required.
Our advice is always to get a free survey before committing to any price. A reputable installer will visit your property, assess your electrical supply, plan the cable route, and provide a fixed-price quote with no hidden extras. Be wary of online quotes that do not include a site visit — the actual cost can be very different from an estimate made without seeing your property.
