7 Warning Signs Your House Needs Rewiring

2026-04-15 6 min read Pennington Electrical Ltd

If your home was built before the 1980s, there is a strong chance the electrical wiring is outdated and potentially dangerous. Many properties across Leeds, particularly the Victorian and Edwardian terraced houses in Beeston, Armley, and Bramley, still have original fabric-insulated or rubber cabling that has long passed its safe lifespan.

The first warning sign is frequent blown fuses or tripped circuit breakers. While occasional tripping can be normal, if your consumer unit trips regularly without an obvious cause like a faulty appliance, it often indicates deteriorating insulation, loose connections, or overloaded circuits within your walls.

Flickering or dimming lights are another classic symptom of old wiring. This happens when connections become loose over decades of thermal expansion and contraction. The flickering may start intermittently but will worsen over time. If multiple rooms are affected, the problem is likely in the main distribution circuits rather than individual light fittings.

A burning smell near sockets, switches, or your consumer unit is an emergency warning sign. It indicates that connections are overheating, which can lead to electrical fire. If you notice any acrid smell, turn off the power at the main switch and call an electrician immediately.

Discoloured or warm sockets and switches are visual evidence of overheating. Brown scorch marks around plug holes or wall plates that feel warm to the touch mean the terminals behind are loose or corroded. This is especially common in aluminium-wired properties from the 1960s and 70s.

If your home still has an old fuse box with rewireable fuses or ceramic fuse carriers, it is well past time for an upgrade. Modern metal consumer units with RCD protection are now mandatory for new installations and strongly recommended for existing homes. Old fuse boxes provide no shock protection and cannot handle modern electrical loads.

Finally, if you are planning an extension, kitchen renovation, or adding an EV charger, your existing wiring may not be able to handle the additional load safely. A pre-project EICR inspection will reveal whether your installation needs upgrading before you add new circuits.
