RCD Testing
Residual Current Devices (RCDs) are life-saving safety devices that cut power within milliseconds if they detect electricity leaking to earth — preventing fatal electric shocks and reducing fire risks. But an RCD only protects you if it works. At Pennington Electrical Ltd, we provide professional RCD testing and replacement services across Leeds, Morley, Wakefield, and West Yorkshire.
RCDs should be tested every three months by pressing the test button, and professionally tested annually to measure the actual trip time. A slow-tripping RCD may not save a life. Worse, a failed RCD gives no warning until it is needed. We use calibrated RCD testers to measure trip times, verify that protection is within the required milliseconds, and replace any RCDs that fail testing.
Modern appliances and installations require increasingly sophisticated RCD protection. Type A RCDs protect against pulsating DC faults from modern electronics, while Type B RCDs are needed for EV chargers and three-phase equipment. We assess your installation and recommend the right RCD types for your circuits, ensuring your protection keeps pace with modern electrical demands.
Quarterly push-button tests only confirm the mechanism moves — they do not measure how quickly the RCD trips. Our professional testing uses calibrated RCD testers to measure trip time at half-rated current, full-rated current, and under ramp testing. BS 7671 requires domestic RCDs to trip within 300ms at rated current and within 40ms at 5x rated current. We verify every RCD meets these critical thresholds.
Failed RCDs, outdated AC-type RCDs, and nuisance-tripping devices all need replacement. We install modern Type A RCDs that handle pulsating DC leakage from modern appliances, and Type B RCDs for EV chargers and solar inverters. We also install selective RCDs for discrimination, ensuring that only the faulty circuit trips rather than the whole property losing power.
New circuits for bathrooms, gardens, EV chargers, and portable appliance outlets must have RCD protection under current regulations. We install RCDs for new circuits, assess whether your existing consumer unit has adequate RCD coverage, and recommend upgrades where protection is missing or inadequate. Every installation is tested and certified.
Benefits
What's Included
Every rcd testing job we undertake is carried out to the highest professional standards. From initial consultation to final certification, we handle every detail so you do not have to worry.
Our Process
We identify all RCDs in your installation, check their type and rating, and visually inspect for damage, burning, or corrosion.
Using calibrated testers, we measure trip times, test at multiple current levels, and verify that every RCD trips within the safety thresholds.
Any failed or inadequate RCDs are replaced with correctly rated modern units. We upgrade AC types to Type A where modern appliances are present.
We provide a test report showing results for every RCD, explain any findings, and advise on testing frequency and any further improvements needed.

FAQ
You should press the test button every 3 months. Professional trip time testing should be done annually or during every EICR. We offer annual RCD testing contracts for landlords and businesses.
AC type protects against pure AC faults only. Type A also protects against pulsating DC faults from modern electronics. Type B protects against smooth DC faults from EV chargers and three-phase equipment. We recommend Type A as the minimum for modern homes.
Nuisance tripping can be caused by cumulative small leakage from multiple appliances, old RCDs that are too sensitive, lightning-induced surges, or an actual developing fault. We investigate the cause and resolve it.
While possible, it is not recommended as a single fault would cut power to everything. Modern consumer units use split-load or individual RCBOs so only the faulty circuit trips, maintaining power elsewhere.
