Tripping Circuits
A tripping circuit breaker is your electrical system telling you something is wrong. Whether it is your RCD tripping repeatedly, an MCB that will not stay on, or the main switch cutting out, these are warning signs that should never be ignored. At Pennington Electrical Ltd, we diagnose and fix tripping circuits for homeowners and businesses across Leeds, Morley, Wakefield, and all of West Yorkshire.
RCD tripping is the most common complaint we hear from Leeds homeowners. RCDs trip when they detect an imbalance between live and neutral currents, which indicates current is leaking somewhere it should not be — often due to a faulty appliance, damaged cable insulation, or moisture ingress. MCBs trip when a circuit is overloaded or has a direct short circuit. We use systematic testing to identify which type of trip is occurring and why.
Constantly resetting a tripped breaker is not a solution — it is a safety risk. A repeatedly tripping circuit can indicate a developing fault that could lead to electric shock or fire. We find the cause, fix it properly, and test your entire system to ensure every breaker and safety device is working as it should. Once we are done, your electrics will be safe, stable, and reliable.
RCDs protect against electric shock by detecting earth leakage. If your RCD is tripping, we perform a systematic half-split test to isolate the faulty circuit, then test each appliance and connection point to find the source of the leakage. Common causes include faulty kettles, washing machines, outdoor sockets, damaged cable insulation, and moisture in light fittings.
MCBs trip when a circuit draws more current than it is designed for. This can be caused by overloading sockets with too many high-power devices, a direct short circuit in a damaged cable, or a faulty appliance drawing excessive current. We identify the overloaded circuit, redistribute loads where needed, and repair any short circuits or damaged wiring.
Some properties experience nuisance tripping where RCDs trip with no obvious fault. This can be caused by cumulative leakage from multiple appliances, lightning-induced surges, or an overly sensitive RCD. We can install selective RCDs, upgrade to Type A or Type B RCDs for better compatibility with modern appliances, and add surge protection to reduce nuisance trips.
Benefits
What's Included
Every tripping circuits job we undertake is carried out to the highest professional standards. From initial consultation to final certification, we handle every detail so you do not have to worry.
Our Process
We ask when the tripping started, what triggers it, and which breaker trips. This gives us a clear starting point for diagnosis.
We test each circuit individually to isolate the fault to a specific circuit, appliance, or safety device. No guesswork — just methodical testing.
Once identified, we repair the fault — whether that means replacing a faulty appliance, repairing damaged wiring, or upgrading an inadequate safety device.
We test the entire installation to confirm the tripping is resolved, all safety devices function correctly, and provide a written report.

FAQ
Random RCD tripping usually indicates a small earth leakage fault that worsens over time. It could be a faulty appliance, moisture in an outdoor circuit, or deteriorating cable insulation. We isolate the cause and fix it.
Yes — breakers trip to protect you. Constantly resetting a tripping breaker without fixing the cause can mask a serious fault that may lead to fire or electric shock. Always get it checked by a qualified electrician.
Older consumer units with outdated RCDs may be too sensitive or incompatible with modern appliances. Upgrading to a modern metal consumer unit with selective RCDs often resolves persistent tripping issues.
We do need to isolate circuits for testing, but we work efficiently to minimise downtime. We can often restore power to unaffected circuits while we diagnose the faulty one.
